Every Control4 smart home is built around a controller — the processor that runs the automation, drives the on-screen menus, hosts the high-resolution audio engine, and ties every device together. Control4's current line is the CORE Series, which replaced the older EA controllers. This guide explains the differences so you can spec the right one.
The CORE Series at a glance
| Controller | Best for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| CORE lite | A single room / entry point to Control4 | Dual-core processor, one zone of high-res audio, HD on-screen menu, IR + serial + IP + Zigbee control. Usually sold as part of the Single Room Bundle. |
| CORE 1 | An entertainment-focused room behind a TV | 4K on-screen UI, two independent audio zones, HDMI + digital coax out, PoE+, built-in 2-port Ethernet switch. Controls AV gear by IR, serial, IP, and Zigbee. |
| CORE 5 | A whole-home system hub | Highest-quality audio of the CORE series and the processing headroom to coordinate hundreds of devices across the house. |
| CA-10 | Large / complex projects | Roughly 4× the processing power and memory of the old EA-5, with multiple fail-safe systems for big, highly responsive installs. |
The decision in five questions
- Is this a whole home, or one room? Whole home → CORE 5 (or CA-10 for large/complex). One room → CORE lite or CORE 1.
- Is the room about entertainment (a TV)? Yes → CORE 1 for the 4K on-screen UI and second audio zone. Just control + a single audio zone → CORE lite.
- How many devices and zones? Hundreds of devices / many audio zones push you to CORE 5 or CA-10.
- Do you need PoE+? CORE 1 can be powered and networked over a single Cat5/Cat6 run.
- Is reliability mission-critical? CA-10's fail-safe systems are built for the largest jobs.
A note on the older EA controllers
The EA-1 / EA-3 / EA-5 controllers were the previous generation, and the EA entertainment bundles are end-of-sale — replaced by the CORE Single Room Bundles (CORE lite + Halo, + Neeo while supplies last, or + SR-260 with recharge station). If you're servicing an existing EA system, those parts still appear in our catalog for reference.
Don't forget licensing & installation
Control4 is a professionally installed system. New U.S. systems require the Control4 Connect software service, and setup is done by a certified Control4 integrator using Composer Pro. We can help you spec the right controller and connect you with installation — request a quote or call 321-747-3220.
